>A new book of Ron Jude’s photographs, emmett, is out now from The Ice Plant. The release of this beautifully printed book is followed by an exhibition of the works at Gallery Luisotti in Santa Monica, opening January 13th.
The emmett photographs were created in the 1980s but have only recently been uncovered and edited. Featuring a scrappy blonde, cars mid drag-race, mysterious landscapes, and late-night television, they convey a feeling of youthful daring, exploration, and independence. Though there’s no indication that the images are related we nevertheless draw our own conclusions about how they might be, resulting in an imaginary narrative that feels something like a dream. Jude’s use of special effects filters and photo lenses adds to the nebulous, dreamlike quality but does not detract from the integrity of the works. Maybe some things should be left in the past, but this is not one of them.Ron Jude: emmett
